Biratnagar – Only two hotels in Biratnagar have been found to have paid star hotel tax. Half a dozen hotels in Biratnagar have been claiming star hotels. But in the metropolis, only two star hotels have paid taxes.
Saroj Kumar Gautam, the officer of the revenue division of the metropolitan city, said that only Hotel Big and Hotel Ratna in Biratnagar have paid the tax of star hotels. Harrison Hotel operated by UML leader Moti Dugad has paid the tax of only ordinary hotels in the metropolitan city. But the hotel has been claiming to be a three-star hotel. Other hotels that claim to be star hotels have also paid taxes like normal hotels. In a metropolitan city, a normal hotel pays 20,000 rupees a year. The tax for a star hotel ranges from 50,000 to 250,000 rupees. According to Gautam, an officer of the Revenue Division, a five-star hotel has to pay an annual tax of 250,000 rupees. A four-star hotel has to pay Rs 2 lakh, a three-star hotel has to pay Rs 130,000, a two-star hotel has to pay Rs 75,000 and a one-star hotel has to pay Rs 50,000. Until July, none of the hotels in Biratnagar had paid the star hotel tax. After being criticized, Big Hotel and Ratna Hotel have paid the tax of four-star hotels. In the metropolis, small restaurants and bars have to pay 10,000 rupees, medium 15,000 and big ones have to pay 30,000 rupees.
According to the Metropolitan Corporation, the tax for lodges and guest houses should be Rs. 3,000 for small, Rs. 8,000 for medium lodges, and Rs. 15,000 for Big ones.
